| GamblingPhD menu | EU Getting Ready to Do Battle September 20, 2008 The European Union is sending a team of investigators to the United States to speak with higher ups in regards to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, or UIGEA. The EU has determined that we have had a clear breach of our WTO commitments in regards to US policy on online gambling. They are sending the team to meet with the United States Trade Representative or USTR, and the US Department of Justice or DOJ. They say that they have no doubt that we are in breach and are coming to see what can be done to come to an amicable solution. According to experts, there is no doubt that the United States is in violation of our WTO agreements, and industry insiders are excited about the trip. They say that the EU is taking the US to task for something they have been fighting for from the inside and getting almost nowhere. They say that our breach is ruining our reputation as a world leader especially since we expect others to follow the letter of the law while we do what we want. They argue that had any other country been in violation in regards to online gambling, we would have been one of the first ones making sure they got into compliance again. The EU says that they are hoping that the US decides to make the right decision and overturn the UIGEA. Other industry experts are just glad that the EU is stepping in as there could be wide reaching consequences for us as a nation if this is allowed to continue. |
