Online Gambling Needs Licensing

September 24, 2008

South African industry experts are concerned with the effect online gambling might have on their residents. They say that the cross border operations are not regulated with the rigueur that they would have them be. They feel that it should be much tougher and regulated much more fiercely than they are.

They say that it is risky at best, and wish to discourage their residents from online gambling. Not only that, but it is still illegal in the country to participate. It is illegal in most of the ways that it is offered on PCs but that is changing.

With the National Gambling Amendment Act looming over the country, the door is about to open for online gambling companies t start applying for their licenses. Those operators that are located outside of the country have been trying to get their foot in the door, but not to much avail.

However, for those that do get through, it is important that those who live in the country realize that online gambling is illegal. Anyone who uses unauthorized, unlicensed online gambling is committing an illegal act and they could end up in jail.

Some forms of online gambling are allowed in the sense that a gambler can pick up a phone or log onto the internet to place a bet on a horse as long as it is with a licensed bookmaker. They can also play online casino games via a licensed casinos computer but they must be at the casino at the time of the access.
