| GamblingPhD menu | PPA Weighs In September 29, 2008 The Poker Players Alliance is finally weighing in on HR 6870 the Payments Service Protection Act. The bill, which is repped by Rep. Barney Frank, would seek to limit the scope of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, or UIGEA. It would make the government give a clear list of what is legal and what is not in the online gambling arena. This past week the House Financial Services Committee passed the bill, much to the surprise of many. The bill would keep online sports betting illegal, and clearly state which of the other types are as well. The PPA said that they were pleased by the passage of the bill, as they felt it would clear up a lot of misconceptions and perspectives on the bill as it stands now. They felt that the bipartisan committee had shone a light on that which should be illegal like sports betting. They also said that the clarification and definition of illegal online gambling needed to be stressed as well. They said that even those people who are against online gambling have to appreciate this bill. They said that the passage of the legislation would truly block illegal online gambling opportunities. They said that they congratulated them on a great bill, and now they just have to wait to see what the House is going to do. They have not voted on it yet. |
