Slot Machine History And Basics

A man by the name of Charles Fey invented the slot machine in the late 1800's. Slot machines first became popular much later when Bugsy Siegal put them in the Flamingo Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas.

The main reason slot machines are so popular is because they don't take any real skill to play and they can be played at any pace the player desires. Over the years they have developed from very simple three reel machines containing about twenty different symbol, into the more complex computer chip run machines that contain more reels, which can sometimes have hundreds of symbols each

Obviously, the older machines with fewer reels and symbols were easier to win against. Meaning, the fewer reels and symbols, the easier it was to get a winning combination. Jackpots were more limited due to this.

The slot machines found today in casinos or online feature random number generators that determine the amount of symbols each reel has based on the amount of the jackpot. Meaning, the higher the jackpot, the more symbols on each reel. Today there are many different types of slot machines with varying jackpots.

You will find that the slot machines of today are usually programmed to have a payout of between 80 to 99%. This is an important factor when choosing a machine to play or when choosing a site to play at online. Keep in mind that when at a casino, you should pay special attention to this factor. There can be several of the same type of machine side by side that look identical, but are in fact programmed to payout a totally different percentage rate. Make sure that when you are in a casino playing that you take note of the payout scale that should be on each machine.

Slot machines come in two basic types, progressive and flat rate. With progressive slot machines, the jackpot continues to grow until hit. With flat rate slot machines, the jackpot is a set payoff.

You odds of winning will depend on which type of machine you use. For example, if you are playing on a three wheel machine that has 30 different symbols and the object is to get a 'jackpot' symbol on each reel, you would multiply 10 X 10 X 10 to get 1,000. So your odds of hitting the jackpot on this machine would be 999 to 1.
