U.K.
warns of casino boom
October 5
In Las
Vegas this week, British
experts expressed their
concern over the proposed
casino projects slated for
the UK. They stated that out
of over 40 projects being
planned by US operators and
the UK, only a few will
likely get built if the
gambling laws are rewritten
as planned to allow more
casinos.
The concerns are stemming
from the
experts preliminary
estimates. They say that the
country can only house from
25-30 casinos, the
largest visualized by the
British government and the
closest to approximate
destination casino resorts
in the United States.
Many
projects were announced when
talk of unlimited gambling
and unlimited jackpots was
at its peak, he said. But
last month the British
government took a more
conservative stand on
gambling expansion by
passing on some
recommendations made by
Parliament.
Over
the past several months many
deals, some involving US
companies including MGM
Mirage and Venetian resort
owner Las Vegas Sands Inc.,
have been announced in
Britain even as several
factors such as the role of
local governments and casino
tax rates remain undecided.
To
date, US casino companies
have not been very
successful running casinos
overseas, this is due in
part, because the US brand
names that are so popular
here don't necessarily
translate into the other
types of cultures. It is
also noted that the new
casinos might take
additional time than already
expected for US companies to
get accustomed to the UK
regulatory system and
structure.
Over
30 offers
have come from many
different casino operators
to take over a state owned
casino in Greece in the year
2002, but US operators
withdrew from the bidding
because of the regulatory
hoops involved in the
process.
Also,
while the UK is known for
its love affair with slot
machines, they tend to play
lower prize slots.
However, even
though
they may not be big
gamblers, people living in
the UK have stated in polls
that they would go to major
casinos for other reasons.
According to these polls,
they state that they are
interested in gambling and
other types of major
entertainment.
